    Wire sculpture. 30x40x25cm approx 2026

When you’ve finished with a spiralbound sketchbook you can always turn the spiral into a kinetic sculpture.

I created this sculpture partly due to my interest in optical illusions and the ambiguity of perception.

When the spiral wire of a spiralbound sketchbook is viewed in isolation from the sketchbook the spirals form a tube-like structure.

When the spiral is observed in certain conditions, such as in this work. the nature of the spiral is hard to interpret. The spiral is reduced from being a three dimensional wire to being a two dimensional black line. The line is interpreted as resembling a tubular structure but the exact orientation of the tube is sometimes hard to deduce – which end of the tube is nearer to the observer?

The work is a form of mobile, with its qualities relying on the facts that it is suspended and rotating.

To me the structure of the tube exhibits the zoomorphic property of sometimes resembling the ribs of a snake.
